FORT BENNING, Ga., (July 31, 2013) - Four female soldiers will make history on August 1 as they become the first women to receive 91A M1 Abrams military professional training. Tank System Maintainer.

Pfc. Emma Briggs, Pfc. Anita Ramirez, Pvt. Erika Leroy and Pvt. Caitlin Killznight is set to complete the 91A course conducted by Company E, 3rd Battalion, 81st Armored Regiment, 194th Armored Brigade.

Neither Briggs nor Leroy knew until they arrived at Fort Benning that they would be the first female caretakers of the Abrams tank system.
"I did not expect to be the first girl until I went to a basic training course and a boss described it to me and told me how hard it was," said Leroy, San. Born in Diego, California.
Briggs, from Cincinnati, Ohio, said he had no mechanical experience before enrolling, but he wanted to.
"When I first joined, it was a process of elimination," he said. "I was offered a lot of options, from HR jobs to desk jobs and other jobs. I do not have a mechanical background, but I'm excited to learn. It's great to be a woman and to be a woman. Know some of these things and maybe I can translate them into auto mechanics or something. I might get into the industry in the future.

Briggs and Leroy attended basic training together, where they formed a friendship that would serve them well throughout their 91A training session.
"I do not know what to try or how to deal with the stress of knowing that you will go to the 110-pound stage, but seeing him do it made me believe I could do it," Leroy said.
Both Briggs and Leroy said they could rely on Killsnight and Ramirez during difficult times.
"We were all very close and we had a great relationship," Briggs said. "We worked well together and it really helped us all because sometimes it takes a group of girls to get into the tank and take care of it because there are heavy machinery and heavy loads in the tank."

In addition to being the first woman to receive a military professional or MOS, along with four soldiers, Briggs will be a graduate student.
Staff Sgt. Jahi Foster, one of 91A teachers, said Briggs' will set him apart from the rest of the class.
"He was very motivated and he came in every day with that attitude," Foster said.
"A lot of students have problems and they come here for months to do things, but he always comes out every day with a strong and ready attitude."

Briggs said she did not think she would become an honorary graduate until the class ran through obstacles.
"My police force encouraged me by saying things like 'Come on, honorary graduate,' so the whole company knows when I know," he said. - I have no idea.
After completing this course, the four must prepare for operational responsibilities under the actual conditions in the Abrams tank.
"It's a big responsibility, but I'm very confident," Leroy said. "I know my stuff and hope I can come back here and show more women that they can do it and give them someone to connect with."
