Glock 19 Vs 365xl - For a guy who likes DA/SA cars and snobbish revolvers, the Sig P365 XL probably seems like an odd choice. But I can't deny that this is a great sidearm. In this review I look at what I learned to like about the P365 XL after 2000 rounds and a few things that could use improvement.
The Sig Sauer P365 XL is the most impressive new pistol I have tested in a long time. Today, I want to talk about why it's quickly becoming one of my favorite concealed carry options.

This pistol enters a whole new category of concealable semi-autos. They're not single-stacked and they're not really dual-stacked either. They are somewhere in between.

Let's go back to the 1990s: the wonder days of the double stack. At the time, a compact pistol was basically a full-size double-stack pistol with the grip cut away and the slide and barrel slightly shortened. For a subcompact, they made everything a bit smaller. We can see perfect examples of this in some of the most popular cars of the time; The compact Glock 19 and the subcompact Glock 26. When every other gun company started making their own pistols out of polymer in the early 2000s, they followed the same basic template.
Then a few years ago the single-stack polymer 9mm came along and shook things up. In 2012, the Smith & Wesson Shield wasn't the first, but it was the weapon that took the unique stack nine from special status to one of the most common types of firearms in the country. Since then, we've seen dozens of new 9mm single-stack polymer pistols in all corners of the industry. And now we are all sick of them. Especially those of us who have to evaluate and review these things to live.
In January 2018, Sig Sauer rescued us from this endless tedium with something a little different: the P365. It looks like a single stacked nine. It is the same size as a single stack of nines. But, somehow they managed to fit ten rounds into this little clown car from a magazine. A typical 9mm single-stack magazine holds 6 to 8 rounds, but this is not a single-stack magazine. The top three or four rounds in the magazine are more or less stacked on top of each other, but then the magazine tapers out and down, the rounds staggering like a double stack.
The gun was a great success. He has won all kinds of awards. There were some reliability issues at the beginning, but the worst of them seem to have been fixed in the first year or so. In May of last year, Sig released a version with a frame-mounted ambidextrous manual safety. And then last July they released this version: the Sig P365 XL.

It has the same slim profile as the original P365 but with a longer barrel and a slightly longer grip for the flush-fitting 12-round magazine. Sig also makes an extended 15-round magazine. It's around 3 ounces heavier than the standard P365 at 26.3 ounces loaded. Most of that extra weight comes from the longer slide and barrel, which measures 3.7 inches instead of 3.1. It is available with or without a manual lock — it has a lock. It also has the XSeries straight trigger, only available as an aftermarket upgrade to the original P365, but standard on the XL. And it has, as standard, a slide machined to accept a set of Sig X-RAY3 night sights and micro red dot optics.
It is worth asking why I became interested in this particular weapon or the P365 in general. I'm content to carry a snub-nosed revolver most of the time. A glorified single stack with a few extra rounds in the magazine doesn't do much for me. If I am going to seriously consider carrying a gun for my personal use, it must be very easy to shoot, very easy to carry, and meet my personal safety standards. I'll come back to the first two in a minute. Let me get the security thing out of the way first. Or maybe "risk management" is a better term.
If you've been watching my videos for a while, you know that for semi-autos, I generally prefer hammer-operated pistols, whether they're double-action or double-action/single-action. I like having the ability to hold the hammer with my thumb so it's physically impossible to fire while holstering the gun. The firing pin control devices available for Glocks are the next best thing. It works just like a hammer when you are upholstering. A manual safety is a distant third option, but depending on how it's designed, I'd consider it for a sidearm.
I don't think security is for everyone. I am especially reluctant to recommend a manual safety for a novice shooter or someone who doesn't practice regularly. But I will draw and holster a pistol thousands of times, both in dry practice and at the range. Each resleeving has the potential to become a catastrophic accident. All it takes is a distraction, a momentary gap in attention.
Phenom Stealth: Edge Works
So, in addition to following best practices for safe gun handling and safe reholstering, you'll want to have at least one extra layer of mechanical protection to help reduce risk. I especially like it if that extra layer doesn't compromise the usability of the weapon. Whether or not this safety manual does is debatable.
I'm going to put a lot of love into this gun and talk about how awesome it is. But this safety manual is not good. It's not terrible either. It's not like the unlucky little knob on a lock you'd find as an option on the Smith & Wesson Shield. And it's not as bad as that weird security in LCP. 22 LR that I talked about a few weeks ago. It has a very positive click on and off and is disconcerting. It could still be so much better. It is not wide enough and should be placed a quarter inch from the frame.
I don't know why the gun companies hate this. I think this is further proof that the people making these design decisions don't actually shoot guns. There are plenty of examples of good hand protection, so there's really no excuse for not knowing what one should look like.
Earlier I mentioned the safety of the M&P 22 Compact. This is excellent security. It's not big at all, but it's wide enough that you can rest your thumb on it while shooting. When gripping the gun, the tip of the thumb naturally descends over the safety to close it. You can not lose this. The P365 protection is just big enough to be usable, and small enough that I miss it every time I try it. And if I put my thumb on it, this sharp edge of the back rubs against my thumb as the gun recoils.

At first it was just annoying, but during a long range session it would actually rip my thumb off. At this point I have a small blood blister under the scar tissue that happens the first few times. Honestly, I could live with that if the security was broader and easier to bypass. Sig, take some of that sweet, sweet cash from charging $50 each for these magazines and hand it over to your R&D team so they can fix this problem.
The appeal of the Sig P365 XL isn't just that it's small and therefore easy to transport. Many pistols are small. This gun is small and can be shot. And it's smaller in a different way than other pistols. Let's look at some size comparisons to show what I mean.
Here on the right we have the world's most ubiquitous compact 9mm, the Glock 19. On the left is the single-stack Glock 9mm, the Glock 43. It's not the smallest 9mm out there, but I think it's in between the smallest nine that are still reasonably available. shootable
I'm going to overlay these two and line them up by the grip tang. This is the highest part of the grip where the web of your hand will go. Obviously the 43 has a shorter slide and grip, and the trigger reach is a bit shorter as well.

Looking at them from behind, the 43 is noticeably slimmer. I measured the widest part of the grip, not including the magazine, and it was 0.81 inches for the 43 and 1.31 inches for the 19.
