The best thing about living in the middle of nowhere is the real estate values. Things are very affordable here. Even in Leesville there are plenty of two bedroom apartments for rent under $700. The city of Leesville has about 10,000 inhabitants. It is less than 20 minutes drive from Fort Polk. It's a great little community that caters to the city-oriented people who come here.
Rosephine is a small town of 1,600 people just over 15 minutes' drive from Fort Polk. It was incorporated as a logging community in 1902 and is the second largest town in the Parish of Vernon. There are six churches in the area. It's a cozy 4 square miles in Rosephine but still has everything you could ask for in a small town.
DeRidder is a half hour drive south of the post office. It's a small town with about 10,000 inhabitants. You'll find a good balance of country and city here as it's a designated city despite being spread across 9 square miles of Louisiana real estate. DeRidder is a historic city with an industrial history of workers. First came the railroad, then lumberjacks, and then the mills. As such, there are many culturally significant attractions to see in the city, including the Old Beauregard Parish Prison and the Beauregard Museum. The city's historic business district is on the National Register of Historic Places.

There's no escaping the fact that the weather in Fort Polk is hot and muggy. When you are here you will sweat and sweat a lot. But that's not recommended - because these are alligators, too. Spring and fall, of course, are much more tolerable than summer, and humidity remains, but it can be managed. Expect rain in winter, but no snow. It's cool some mornings and maybe stays that way all day, but never cold enough to require much layering.
There is a lot to see around the Post. The surroundings are really beautiful and if the weather cooperates, which is usually the case, you can make the most of nature. The nearby Alligator Lake Recreation Area is home to countless wildlife and hiking trails and is a beautiful fishing spot for the angler in your life. Just be careful not to wade in too deep because of – you guessed it – alligators. Covering part of the township of Vernon, the Kisatchie National Forest offers plenty of camping and hiking opportunities for the whole family. There are also many cultural attractions in the area, such as the Fort Polk Military Museum and the Museum of West Louisiana. There are also many fine restaurants to choose from, with a variety of cuisines to suit whatever hunger you may be feeling.
